Whether you're a kayaker looking to build real expedition experience or wanting to develop the skills needed to explore further afield, this two-day journey into the Hauraki Gulf gives you the practical foundations for successful multi-day coastal adventures. You'll work through the essential planning skills every expedition paddler needs; tidal planning, basic weather interpretation, and chart work, before putting them into practice on the water. We keep the focus on practical, hands-on learning throughout, developing your on-water hazard awareness across the full range of coastal conditions including wind, waves, surf, rocks, and other vessels, so you can make sound decisions that keep yourself and those around you safe. You'll also gain hands-on experience in coastal camping directly off the ocean, learning the logistics and routines that make multi-day expeditions run smoothly. By the end of the two days, you'll have the navigational skills, environmental awareness, and expedition experience to greater tackle coastal conditions with confidence and the foundations to keep exploring further.
